BUTTERFAT PRODUCERS.
CONFERENCE AT WELLINGTON. EQUALISATION OF VALUES. A conference is to be hclj at Welling- ' ton between the Dominion Butter Committee and the .Minister of Imperial .Supplies, the Hon. D. H. Guthrie. to-iuor-row. It will be remembered that the Imperial Government purchased lost sea- |i son'a butter at an upset price, subject ! to an arrangement that the profits made on the surplus sold in Great Britain on the English market, after satisfaction of the Government's neede, would be divided between the Imperial Government and the New Zealand industry. The distribution of the profits which should come to Now Zealand will be ,' dealt with by the conference, and the conference will also deal with the proposed sale to the Imperial Government of the cominpr season's butter. It is ex- j pected that an equalisation fund will 'be established covering the 'whole of the butter for export, and for local requirements. In Canada the Ministry of Food has put all milk products an a parity with cheese, and this would appear to form a satisfactory bnsis of treatment for the whole of butterfat production. Up to the present the parity as between butter and cheese hne not. been dealt with as far as New Zealand is concerned upon this basis. Such arrangement would ensure to the milk producer, whether he supply milk for local distribution or his product is made into butter or cheese, an equal return, after consideration of the costs of manufacture and the value of the by-products. The results of the conference are looked forward to with much interest by Xew Zealand producers.
