THE WAIHI STRIKE.
SETTLED BY CONFERENCE. WORK RESUMES TO-MORROW. (By Telegrnpfc.-Owr- Correspondent.) WAIHI, this day. After a lengthy sitting the conference between representatives of the Ohinemuri branch of the Amalgamated Society of Fngineers and mining companies, under the chairmanship of Mr. Harle Giles (Conciliation Commissioner), relevant to the engineers' strike, concluded on Sunday afternoon. A proposal (the terms and conditions of which are not for publication) was agreed to, and signed by both parties, and will be submitted to the Arbitration Court.
At the conclusion of the proceedings the Commissioner asked the workers for an assurance that they would resume work on Tuesday, Monday being a holidajejund this was unanimously given. Both sides expressed the opinion that if it had not been for the intervention of Mr. Harle Giles there was no likelihood of a settlement of the dispute, which undoubtedly had all the appearances of developing into a serious industrial upheaval, aid there is little doubt that the seriousness of the position was not at all realised by either the authorities or the outside public
The Mayor (Mr. Donaldson), who was present at the conclusion of the proceedings, congratulated Mr. Harle Giles upon the success of the settlement of the dispute, which had every aspect, he said, of bringing disaster on the town-
The Commissioner was congratulated on all sides upon the successful conclusion of one of the most diflieult situations he had yet been called upon to handle.
