THE TRAMWAY TROUBLE.
A MEETING OF THE UNION. SECRET BALLOT WILL BE HELD. ON THE STRIKE QUESTION. A meeting of the p.m. shiftmen of the Auckland Electric Tramways Union, held at the Tradea Hall this morning at ten o'clock, was very largelyattended. This meeting was callea in response to a largely-signed requisition for a special meeting to consider the question of enforcing the men's demands for a living wage for a 48-hour wees, such week to consist of six shifts of eight hours each. Another important matter that came under discussion was the question whether or not the men should hold a stop-work meeting to discuss the position at ten o'clock on Saturday morning, June 1. This stop-work meeting had been suggested because of the fact that it was impossible to get a true consensus of opinion regarding the matters under dispute unless the men had the opportunity of being all present iogether. The meeting, however, was of opinion that this move should not be adopted at the present juncture, and a member demanded that instead of this a secret ballot be taken. The rules of the union provide that this secret ballot may be held on any important matter at the demand of a member, and • accordingly the ballot of the whole of the members will be taken on the question of a strike. if the demand for a threepenny increase per hour is not granted to all employees affected by the 1915 agreement. In all probability this ballot will be taken about Tuesday of next week.
