AMERICANS' FINE DEED.

DESTROYER'S HAZARDOUS DASH. WASHINGTON, May 27. The Navy Department has issued a thrilling narrative of the rescue from a sea of flame of the survivors of the ship Florence, which was destroyed by an explosion in a French port on April 17. After the explosion the surrounding water was covered with a mass of boxes of smokeless powder, which were constantly exploding. The survivors clung to wreckage, but could not be reached by small boats, owing to the water being covered with wreckage, while the ship : s lifeboats were ablaze. A motor boat became jammed and enveloped i:i a mass of flame, when Captain Haislip, commander of an American destroyer, despite the danger from the explosions mid the terrific heat of the burning vessel, drove his destroyer through the flaming wreckage, rescuing 34 sur\ivors, who were otherwise doomed. The rescuers have been I recommended for decorations.— (A. and X.Z. Cable.)
