SOLDIERS' HOSTEL.
ABBEY HOUSE LEASED. The necessity for the establishment of a hostel for "convalescent soldiers has been frequently referred to in Auckland, and at last definite action has been taken by the Women's Mutual Aid Society in conjunction with the Returned Soldiers' Association. The lease of the furnishings and fittings of the Abbey Boarding House in Upper Queen Street has been purchased and it will be at once fitted up for a hostel. The building is in every way suitable, and has the merit of being on the tram line, and also almost on the level, which is a matter of importance for the soldiers who may be on crutches. That no time is being lost in getting the hostel started is shown by the fact that possession is to be given early next month, and the 6oldiers will be in even while alterations and furnishing are under way. The trustees of the Society are the Hon. E. W. Alison and Messrs. G. H. Wilson and J- P- Campbell. An option to purchase has also been secured at a price below the present Government valuation. The hostel will be under the following board of control: — Sir Frederick Lang, the Hons. E. W. Alison and Geo. Fowlds, Messrs. J. P. Campbell. G. H. Wilson, E. C. Browne, H. T. Merritt, J. Melling, C. Waddingham, president, and F. E. "Andrews, secretary of the Returned Soldiers' Association, E. W. Inder. and Mesdames J. P. Campbell. C. V. Houghton, and S. X. Yon Stunner.
On completion of the hostel it will he placed under the charge of a matron, while the ladies of the Women's Mutual Aid Society will give their services free in the matter of attendance.
