At the meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council held last evening a short ! diecueeiou took place regarding the payiinent of the rate demand by the Auckland Gas Company. The town clerk (Mr. !h. Buiseon) reported that the rate demand, claiming rates on the mains withj in the borough, had been returned by the Gas Compnny, and he recommended" that the Auckland City Council, Mount Eden Board, Mount Albert, Newmarket, and
other adjacent town boards and road boards, be communicated with, with a view to taking joint action to have the case decided. The Mayor (Mr. C. Leek) said he thought the town clerk's suggestion a very good one. He did not see why the Newmarket Borough Council should pay their ratee when the Auckland Gas Company go free. He moved that they submit the letter to the different bodies, and it was eeconded by Cr. Eagleton. .
