POLICE COURT.

A Maori named Tono Ngere (24) stood accused of the theft of a silver watch, gold chain, and gold medal, valued at £13 16/-, the property of another native, at Opotiki last year. Sub-inspector Wohlman said the statement of accused that he had put the watch into a jeweller's shop for repairs had been proven correct, but he had pawned the chain and medal. The owner of the jewellery had given accused the articles to take care of, and he admitted having pawned the chain for £2. Ngere said his home was at Whangaroa. He was remanded in custody till Monday, pending the report of the Probation Officer. A WITNESS IN HOSPITAX. The hearing of the charge against George Dufty (40) that' he assaulted Harry France and caused him actual bodily harm, and that he made mischief by breaking a pane of glass valued at £14 14/-, was adjourned again till Friday, March 1.
