' - Yesterday in _.the Police -Court..* charge against Ernest Edward .Crane of procuring liquor during the currency Til a prohibition order was dismiaeed, ac there seemed a reasonable doubt about the -facts. William Barker, an old man of 73,
pleaded guilty of being drunk, and procuring liquor -while be was prohibited. 'He ■was convicted and discharged on the first count, and on the second waa convicted and fined £2, in default seven days' imprisonment. ' ' - \i GENERAL. Duncan Simpson -was fined , 5/, witix costs 7/, for. leaving a horse and cart facing against the traffic in Karanga•hape Road. . r The old man, Michael Jenings, who has faced the Court several -times pfending arrangements for an abode which will be suitable for him, refused to give any undertaking that he -would .remain in "the Costley Home if he were sent there. He had refused to remain at the Salvation Army Home at Epsom, and had the fixed idea that Gisborne was the best place for him. He jwas remanded for another week to enable the police to make arrangements. (Before Mr. C. E. Cutten, SM.). . CHARGE OF THEFT. William James Rodgers, a lad aged 17, ■was charged that on Septeroiyr 20," Wl7, he stole from a shop occupied by Amy Churches 45 packets of cigarettes, 4 packets of tobacco,? boxes of chocolate,-5/-worth of fruit, and 8/- in coppers, to a total value of £2 12/9. He was also charged that on January 29, 1918, he broke into the shop of Emily Young ana stole 5 bottles of soft drinks, valued at 2/6. In a statement made to the police he admitted having broken through one of the windows and taken four boxes of cigarettes and about 2/- worth of coppers. He was in the employ of WHliani Orange, horse trainer, Royal Oak. Mr. Shell (Juvenile Probation Officer), recommended that the accused be taken away from his present employment and placed on probation. The adjutant .of the Salvation Army stated that the betf had formerly been with them, and had conducted himself very well. He though* if the lad were removed from his present influences he would have a chance ol making good. Accused was convicted and committed to the Wereroa Training Farm, and ordered to pay the costs oi the broken window and articles taken- a? far as the money in his possession woulß permit. . . JUVENILE OFFENDERS. .. Three juvenile .offenders, on charges of not being under proper control, Verb committed to an industrial home', in Auckland.
