PERSONAL.

I Sir 'Robert Stout, Chief Justice, has gone to Dunedin to attend the session of the University Senate, ac Chancellor.

Mr. H. A. Beauchamp, manager of Kodak (Australasia), Ltd., is staying at the Grand Hotel.

Mr. T. Wilßtff.jbf Taihape, who' recently died at Wellington, aged 70 years, wae well known as the founder of several newspapers in country districts.

Dr. C. J. Reakee, Director of the Live Stock Division of the Department of lAgrieultnre, wae a passenger for Wellington by the express last evening.

Mr. H. H. Ostler left last evening by the express for Wellington, to attend the annual session of the University Senate.

Miss M. G. D. Turner, at present as-sistant-inistrees on the staff of the Waitaki Girls' High School, hae been appointed first assistant-mistress at the Rangiora High School.

Mr. W. S. Littlejohn, who was for 22 years on the staff at Nelson College, during five of which he held the position of principal, and is now principal of Scotch College, Melbourne, is on a visit ,to Nelson.

Mr. G. Allport, secretary to the Marine Department, has arrived by the Hinemoa from Wellington, on an official inspection of the Northern lighthouses. He leaves again for the North by the Hinemoa to-morrow.

Mrs. D. E. Knowles, relict of the late Mr. E. W. Knowles, who died recently aged 86 years, was born at Islington, London, and brought up in the Scilly, Tales. Coming to Hawke's Bay in. 1860, the late Mrs Knowles had resided here ever since.

Mr. H. S. Cordery, examining officer at Chrurtchurch, has been appointed accountant to the Government Wheat Purchase Department. Mr. C. E. Butcher, who" is at proeent relieving the Collector of Customs at Weetport, and Mr. L. Brewer, of the Greymouth staff, are both being transferred to Christchurch.

Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Still, of Petone, are the parents of eight eons who enlisted voluntarily. The oldest (Private J. H. Still) aged 35, who was educated at Mount Cook and Newtown Schools, and left with the Eighteenth Reinforcements in October, 1916, was killed in action on December 14th last. Five of the brothers are still fighting, and two more are going into camp early next I month.
