AUSTRALIA'S VERDICT.

■ COMMENT IN CANADA. EVIDENCE OF WEAKENED ! MORAL. AN APPEAL TO THE COUNTRY SUGGESTED. (Received 10.30 a.m.); OTTAWA, January 13. The announcement of the final Australian figures for the conscription referendum reopens editorial comment in the Canadian Press. Regret is re-expressed at Australia's action, which is regarded as a blow at the British cause, and giving evidence of a weakened moral. These indications, it is pointed out, are only too likely to rejoice the enemy. Some newspapers suggest that Mr Hughes ought to appeal again to the country purely on the conscription issue, and enforce the law if returned. Emphasis is placed on the vital need of men.— (A. and N.Z.)
