ENGLISH WOMEN AND WAR.

The following advertisements appeared lin a recent English paper:—"Head Kitchenmaid wanted; 3 in kitchen; family two; 10 servants; excellent situation." In the "Scotsman" appeared the following:—"Wanted, Maid-House-keeper, 1 lady, 10 servants, required; £40." "Cook, good, required November 12th; comfortable situation, one mile from country town; seven servants, one kitchenmaid; two in family; wages, £40 'to £45." It is often asked: Does the British Empire know it is ot war? Evidently not when advertisements like these appear at the heart of the nation, while in a paper of similar date appeared an appeal by Mr G. OH. Roberts (Minister of Labour) for 10,000 women a month. He made it plain that the 9,000 women at present employed with the Army have amply justified the formation of the corps. He also made a most fervent appeal to women who could do so to join the corps in the full consciousness that they would be rendering their country as valuable services as did the soldier and sailor. Sir Francis Lloyd spoke with great appreciation of thi work of women who have replaced men cooks in the Army. And in almost the same edition the wealthy classes of England put in plain print exactly how much the present war situation was | appreciated by their class. Yet the Minister informed them that every woman who enrolled released a man for the Army, and the demand for men was greater than at any previous time.
