DAMAGE BY WATER.
LAST NIGHT'S DOWNPOTJK. ; BUSINESS PREMISES FLOODED. What was practically an isolated case ef damage by the heavy downpour last niglit is reported from Meesra. Soonan Bros, auctioneers and house furniehers, at the corner of Victoria and Lome Streets, damage to the extent of about '£500 having been caused to the stock of carpets, bedding, furniture, etc., by water that overflowed from blocked down pipes and gutters, and filtered through to the gTound floor.
First knowledge of the flood was obtained premises being opened at eight o'clock this morning, when the ground floor, which holds the wire mattresses and furniture, was covered with a sbeet of water an inch deep.
To let this away holes had to be bored in the flooring.
On the first and second floors carpets, mats, bedding, etc., suffered considerable damage, the water thoroughly soaking these stocks.
The extent of the damage is total loss, as the stock is not insured against damage by water.
Prior to the occurrence the stock was fßalued at £3,000.
