THE RACING SPIRIT.
. (To the Editor.) Sir,—Replying to your correspondent I "Delta," I ask how can we declare that [.this particular eport is eating the life out of the community? "Quite the reverse," I am sure, will be endorsed' by many. In these dreadful times we must l.keep up the spirits of the people; it is j dangerous for us to go about with our '■ heads in our hands. If we stop horse- ! racing to-morraw it will not win ! war, and I feel sure that our brothers at the front have no desire for its abandonment. Ac regards the ■do not think you could suggest anything fairer, and I am sure no one will 'begrudge the- email percentage taken ou'£ of the receipts toy the State, which is obviously appropriated and utilised for 'the benefit of the community. Although il myself am not keen on this old English sport, I should regret ite abolition, and, fin conclusion, would like to mention that racing here would be fairer and purer, and more interesting, if jockeys were debarred from owing or training raceac in England.—l am, etc., J.C.
