DEMONSTRATION IN SYDNEY. SYDNEY, December 18. - If the reception accorded to Mr Hughes on his arrival at Sydney is any criterion of the public feeling in regard to the referendum, advocates of conscription must feel highly gratified. Thousands of returned soldiers met Mr Hughes at the station and carried him shoulder high. There was a remarkable demonstration through the crowded 'streets. The Prime Minister's speech was wildly cheered. It was probably the greatest reception Mr Hughes has ever had.—-(A. and N.Z.)
