A religious atmo-i sphere dominated the proceedings, a which chiefly comprised adjudication t upon a number of appeals on behalf of ( clergymen and students of several c Churches. V The chairman of the Board (Mr. F. J. t Burgess, S.M.) intimated at the outset ] that as the result of a recent conference < the Military Service Boards had agreed , to adopt a uniform policy regarding the ( ippeals of-clergymen, and in accordance t with the practice in Great Britain, all c .lergymen proved to be recognised as such , md belonging to recognised and estab-1 lished denominations, were to be ex-j smpted. The conference,- it is understood, did not definitely decide how the appeals of theological students would be treated! other than as usual. j EXEMPTION OF PRIESTS. = | Monsignor Mahoney, on .behalf of Bishop Dleary, appealed for Jeremiah C. Cahill (Parnell), Wm. C. J. M., Dunphy (St. Benedict's), Henry F. Holbrook (Grey, Lynn), Wm. J. Murphy, Patrick O'Flynn, Michael Bleakley, George A. Kelly (Auckland), James A. Molloy (Pukekohe), Martin J. O'Doherty (Puhoi), who were; ordained priests of the. Roman Catholic Church, all engaged in religious wofk; i The appeals were adjourned sine die. The appeal.of Michael Shore, a thco-| logical student at the Mosgiel College, was referred to the Otago Board to: decide. MARIST BROTHERS. The following Marist Brothers, whose calling up was represented as being contrary to public interest on the ground of occupation, they being professed reli- ; gious teachers, bound by vows, had their . cases adjourned sine die, Monsignor ' aiahony appearing:—Patrick J. The chairman pointed out that the Board's attitude to clergy or ministers also applied to Marist Brothers, whose appeals would adjourned sine dicj on ;. the understanding that the appeals may be reviewed at any future date if the i War Office intimated any change in the Imperigi practice regarding the exemp- i tions of men of religious orders. i ANGLICAN CLERGY. j Archdeacon Mac Murray, for Bishop Averill, appealed on behalf of,ministers of the Anglican Church, and the. follow- j ing appeals were adjourned sine die: — John R. Evidence was taken in the' appeal of George E. Moore, and is to be i forwarded to Chrißtchurch. j
