Campbell, storekeeper, t Colonial Ammunition Company, was ap- j pealed for by the manager and attorney (C. A. Whitney) on the ground of occu- z patdon, as Campbell could not be re- •} placed. Appellant said there were hun- g dreds of operations to be carried out c which would take years for a man to * get conversant with. If Campbell were r taken it would entail hardship on the g company and its business. There was £ no man employed who could take the i place of Campbell. r The appeal was adjourned sine die. 1 FARMERS' OBLIGATIONS. ' John M. Colville, of Mauku (Mr. ] Glaister) sought the retention of his son, * John M. Colville, one son being on ser- ( vice and one at school. He was farming , 124 acres and running 51 cows which , were milked by machine. He had no ', other help but this son. He had sold a , larger farm in the north in order to . allow the other son to go to the war. , Appellant said he could not do without ■ the son appealed for. The ease was adjourned sine die. David H. Mehaffy, of Karaka, near Papakura (Mr. McVeagh) was the only son able to work the farm of his father, a cripple. He was the only male worker ■on the 426 acres, which was purchased by ihis parents in January, 1915, and in which his parents were financially in- i volved. He had brothers, aged IG, 15, and J 8 years, and two sisters, one of whom. \ Hvae married and had a child, her husband (being on active service. They all lived < on the property. Appellant said he did ; a little droving, but was chiefly engaged cultivating and working the farm, which was being improved. Appellant's mother ; gave evidence, and the appeal was adjourned for further information. David W. Blake, storekeeper, Bombay, CI, asked for leave, and obtained same till March 13. James Carr, Papatoetoe, a reservist, who married in 1912, and was living with his wife and child, claimed to be wrongly icallcd up. The Board decided to allow the appeal as appellant was a member of class B of the Second Division. FOR THE EMPIRE. Thomas Hollinger, or _.vondale, a volunteer, whose father appealed, obtained extension of leave till April 7, he being the last remaining son at home, four being on, active service. He was given the right to make further application if necessary. The appeal of Robert Mitchell, Keppell Street, the last remaining son of the family, three brothers being on active service, was adjourned until Friday for medical re-examination, appellant, a volunteer, having been previously rejected. A MEASURE OF SACRIFICE. Albert McSweeney, of Mt. Albert (Mr. Singer), who had a brother on service and one rejected from camp, said that, : though four brothers were on the place and he also had a married brother, he : was essential to the farm where 25 to 30 cows were milked. It was pointed out that only offe son out of seven was i serving and none had volunteered. The s appeal was adjourned till February. i Wm. Adamson, of Waiuku, was de- ' clared to be a member.of B class of the , Second Division. John L. S. Crump, of • Oneroa (Mr. Scantlebury), a member of ! the Second Division, classed CI, sought • financial assistance, and his case was ! adjourned till April 7. James Crisp, i importer, Auckland (Mr. Gould), a Sec- ' ond Division reservist, was allowed four ! months to arrange affairs. Percy. H. ' Lapwood, of Tuakau. for similar rea- > sons, got till April. The appeal of Rich--1 ard Smythe, whose father made applica--1 tion. was adjourned sine die. Bland A. ' Atherton, engineer, Glenfield. - volunteer, ! proved that he was under military age ' when called up. CJeorge A. Brown, of 1 \ Dominion Road, did likewise.

SUPPORT OF CRIPPLED COUPLE, j Robert Mitchell appealed on the ground I; that he was the only son left to look j after an aged crippled couple. He hadj three brothers on active service. Appellant had previously been rejected for ser- 1 vice. To permit of appellant being medically examined, the case was adjourned until Friday. EARLY MORNING MILKING. Albert McSweeney, farmer, of Mount Albert, was represented by Mr. Singer. He appealed on the ground of occupation. He was milking 25 to 30 cows, starting lat 1 a.m., after which he had to deliver I the milk. He was the sole support of his aged mother and invalided-brothers. One brother was at the front, and the other had been sent back from camp. Four brothers were on the farm, and another was married. Major Conlan pointed out that only one son was serving out of seven, and none had volunteered, and • suggested that some of the invalided brothers could run the farm. The case was adjourned until" February 7. AN ORCHARDIST'S APPEAL. Thomas Hallinger, farmer, Avondale, requested leave for .is son Thomas, who had enlisted. He was the only ■ son of five left to help him with an orchard. The others were on active service. He would be willing to allow his son to go when one of the sons on active service returned. Leave until April 7 was granted, and appellant was told he could apply again if a son did not return by then. The case was adjourned pending inquiry as to the reason for discharge. UNDER AGE. George Arthur Browne, Dominion Road, appealed on the ground that he was not of age. Certificate of birth being submitted, the appeal .was allowed. ASKED FOR TIME. James Crispe (Mr Gould), of "Cargen," Auckland, importer,'.was granted leave until April, when his case will be reviewed again.
