Taj Mahal is the latest aspirant for jumping honours, and in his Initial dlsplav over the pony hurdles nt Ellerslie gave sufficient promise to encourage his trainer to persevere with him.

Particulars of the running of the Reynolds' Handicap at the Wairarapa Meeting show that L_e, the rider of Nanna in that event, lost one of his irons during the race, the mare being beaten in the last stride by a head.

The gelding Torotoro has bad another change of stables, and ls-;now -ratklngsat Ellerslie under the supervision of .. Chante. The son of Bunyan will probably be schooled over hurdles shortly.

Almo, -which was purchased by Mr. "W. Richmond at the Melbonrne yearling sales, lias joined the team under the charge of n. Jones at Rardwick, which looks as If his new owner Intended to give him a chance to earn distinction In Sydney

No less than four odds-on favourites were successful at the Wairarapa meeting on Thursday, while a very short priced one in Isnnna was beaten into second place. Hymestra, Mystified. Torfreda and Comment nil returned their supporters less than even money.

defeat of Nanna in the Reynolds Handicap at the Walrarana Meeting has caused her to go out of favour somewhat for the A.R.C. Railway Handicap. Too m , u< i„ ce > however, should not be taken i_*_. _"_*V, f , or tbe fl "y Ilad tu e good weight of 8.11 ln the saddle over n seven furlong course, while the racing and travelling she has had of late might have upset fcer a bit. tinder the conditions she would not have run a bad race to get second.

Mr. Murdoch McLean, who died on Wednesday, was well known In racing circles hnd for a number of years acted as committeeman and steward of the Auckland Racing Club. The deceased gentleman raced a number of horses at various times the most notable being Lochbule, Celtic' and Ashby, the latter being one of the fastest two-year-olds seen in Auckland, but which unfortunately injured himself bndlv by trying to jump a stone wall. He was also Interested in several others raced by an Auckland syndicate. A man of sound judgment, Mr. McLean will be greatly missed.

Before the sale of the late Hon. .T. D. Ormond's horses it was an open secret that Torfreda, the two-year-old full-sister to Hymestra, was well endowed with the gift of galloping, and Mr. McDonald had to go to SOOgna to gel possession of her. Like her full-brother, she won at the first time of asking for her new owner, accounting for the Nursery Handicap at the Wairarapa meeting on Thursday, defeating ten others. There may not have been a great deal of merit her win, for those she defeated are for the most part unknown quantities, but she may turn out as good as her private reputation suggests.

Quite the feature of the recent racing has been the success of Mr Bidwill's mare Devotion, which has won the principal events at the Feildlng, Woodville, and Wairarapa meetings In succession, her last victory heing uuder the good weight of 8.11. The daughter of All Black was in the Auckland Cup at G.lo. but was allowed to drop out at the first acceptance, for which her owner will now probably be sorry, for even with flic 71b penalty she would have incurred she would only have 7.3. On paper it looks as if Mr. Bidwill had thrown away a great chance of winning the most valuable race in the Dominion.

Mr. Kemball did not have to wait long for some return of the money he paid for Hymestra, the son of Hymettus winning for his new owner at the first time of asking. Considering that he had 0.9 in the saddle Hymestra's performance was a distinctly good one, and is evidence thnt he has not lost the pace he developed as a two-year-old. Hymestra Is now a good favourite for A.R.C. Railway Handicap, for which he has not incurred a penalty, his weight remaining at S.G. while his presence at.the Auckland Club's meetins will lend considerable added interest to the, Great Northern Derby and Royal Stakes. A win in any of these events would give considerable satisfaction .for Mr. ; Kemball has not let money stori him to get the best, and therefore deservoV the best. ueseryea

A box has been secured at Green Lane for the Gisborne horse Gazlque.

Hymestra is reported to have won the Tuhitarata Handicap at the Wairarapa Meeting easily by a couple of lengths.

J. H. Jefferd Is expected to reach Ellerslle this evening with his team for the AJt.C. Summer Meeting.

T. and K. Qnlnllvan arc due to arrive from the South by the Mouowal on Monday morning.

P. Christmas came as far as Wellington with Mery Cross and Glendowcr, and then transhipped to the Monowal, which Is due here on Monday.

The Birkenhead gelding Shackelton, whicli was passed lv at the sale of th_ Karnmu horses, has been purchased by W. H. Windsor, and was brought from the South by the Arahura yesterday.

»h n J* rrin « to Oay Crusader's victory in « rSi Newmarket Gold Cup, a writer lv the Held says:—" Gay Crusader has now won the Two Thousand, the New Derby, fae September Stakes, and the Newmarket <>01d Cup off the reel, and the chief thing to be noted about him is that, like his sire Bayardo. he has made an extraordinary amount of Improvement during the season. Bayardo was beaten in the Two Thousand and Derby, and then ran up a long string of victories, which included the St. Leger) and In every race showed himself a better ■horse than on the previous occasion of blx running. Gay Crusader actually began the present season with a defeat, being beaten nearly a length' by Cog dOr ln the Column Produce Stakes- when attempting to give lib. His next race, the Two Thousand, gave him his first victory of the year, hut it was only by a short head that he defeated his stable companion Magpie, which was afterwards sold to go abroad: and such horses as Athdar and Brown Prince were close enough up to sucgest that they might possibly turn the tables in the future. In the New Derby, however, the victory was more decisive, for Gay Crusader came well away from his field nnd scored In the smoothest fashion. In the Inst two races he has not been extended, and he stands out not only the champion of the year, but as a great horse, and one of the easiest triple-crown winners of all time.

TURF TALK FROM THE SOUTH. CANTERBURY. (By Telegraph.—Special to ' _tur.') CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The weather conditions were very pleasant early yesterday, and the Klccarton trainers who were out before breakfast missed the strong wind which interfered with the later operations. The inside of the trial grass provided good going. Margerine was the lirst out and she reeled olt a mile ln her best style, finishing up ln 1.45. She Is in rare good fettle, and she should be dangerous ln any races she takes part in during the next few weeks.

Bhuuuietye had Christopher Sly as a companion over the last live of nine furlongs. She finished her task strongly, covering the distance ill 1.D7.

The two-year-olds Llonskln and lleathorcote sprinted half a mile smartly. They have no immediate eugagements, but should be ready tv race early in the New Year.

Spnngio and Battle Eve were associated over nine furlongs, which they left behind in 1;58 2-5. They went very fast over the rtrst part, and were stopping a bit at the end. Eleus and Indus were to have galloped together, but Indus broke away, and could not be pulled up, striding along at a useful three-quarter pace over about six furlongs. Eleus was then sprinted alone, doing a smart half-mile.

Lovesick got through a useful sprinting task, starting at the top of the straight and continuing round to the back. This sister to Nones is a delicate mare, but she is on the improve, aud as she Is galloping well she should soon pick up a good race.

Ascalnphus sprinted half a mile in 40 1-r.s. a brilliant effort, finishing well : while Briar Patch ran six furlongs attractively In 1.18.

Subterfuge gave Belair a start and caught her at the cud of half a mi!» up the back, run in 50 2-r>s.

Winter Cherry, assisted by Love Token over the last part, registered 1.17 over six furlongs, a useful performance. Phil May occupied 1.18 to run over the same ground alone.
