SERGEANT GALLAHER.
j TRIBUTES TO THE HERO. I Tributes to the late Sergeant David Gallaher, the famous "All Black" footballer, who was recently killed in action in France, were paid at the concluding session on Saturday evening of the Orphans' Club, of which the late Sergeant I Gallaher was an esteemed member. j The President (Mr C. J. Parr. M.P.) | said that Sergeant Gallaher was a mem- ! ber of the club for the past ten years, ;bping part of the time a steward. The deceased was best remembered as the captain of the finest Rugby football team < that ever left New Zealand shores—the famous "All Blacks." Gallaher's fame was universal. He was a leader of men and a gentleman. Patriotically he had offered his services to the Empire, and, as in the sports game, he played the j greater game to the finish. He was ! honoured hv all who knew him. On the j speaker's proposal a motion of condolence was passed to the relatives of Sergeant Gallaher. Later in the evening Bro. Whittaker, of the Auckland Savage Club, added to the eulogy. David Gallaher, he said, was one of the men who got his head down in the scrum and never stopped till he reached the goal and scored. He always kicked the ball to advantage, and played the game fairly and squarely. Thousands of people would deplore his untimely death, because Dave Gallaher was the sort of man the Eznpire could ill afford to lose.
