ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS.
ANXIOUS.—The Tainui arrived at Port Chalmers on December 21, 1885. WAR TAXATION. (To the Editor.) Sir.—At the present time a man pays over three shillings in the pound ii he happens to invest a little money in a company. While at the same time if he made ten times the amount out of a private shop lie might not pay one penny. And if he made UiOO a year at the outside, he would only pay 1/2 in the £ on ,t;:il)(). The resolution moved by Mr. Chambers, at the recent meeting, seems in the right, direction. Last year ordinary incomes paid 1/2 in the X. if that will not give the necessary amount increase it. but make each one pay according to their ability to do so. I fail to see why a single man or woman, with £20(1 a year, or even less, and no dependents, should not pay tax. and many of those who would have to pay agree with mc. Allowance is now made for children and insurance, and if the limit was reduced piovision should be made for all real dependents. The excess profits tax was f a i r enough in most cases, but in other.- it was a gross injustice. People do not object to pay taxi's, but they do object to paying either more or lers than their fair share. — I am, etc.. ONE WHO WAS NOT OVERTAXED.
