FREIGHT ON COAL.
REASON FOR INCREASE. ,By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON", this day. Questioned regarding the reported project to increase freight on coal from Newcastle, Mr. Aiken, general manager of the Union Steamship Company, stated that the Government recently asked the company to deliver 3,000 tons of Newcastle coal monthly. This amount was considerably more than the normal average which* had to be handled with a depleted feet, and meant that ships must be hurried and could not lift return cargoes of timber, having to go to Newcastle in ballast, and Thus suffering loss of freight-earning capacity. The Munitions Board therefore had recommended an allowance of Three shillings per ton additional in cases where vessels had to make tho trip to Newcastle in ballast.
