DETERMINED GERMAN ATTACK NORTH OF SOISSONS.
TROOPS FROM EAST FRONT DRIVEN BACK. (Received 12.15 p.m.) LONDON, June 21. A French official report states:—A German attack yesterday to the eastward of Vauxaillon, 8 miles north-east of Soissons, was extremely violent. It was prepared by the artillery and carried out by assaulting troops of a fresli division from the Russian front. The attack was broken by our stubborn resistance. All the enemy attempts to increase bis early gains were broken by our fire. The Germans were finally unable to penetrate our first line except at two points southward of Mount Singe and northward of Moisy Farm. Our counter attack regained the former position. — (High Commissioner's Cable.) FOOTING GAINED IN FIRST LINE TRENCH (Received 11.25 a.m.) LOXDOX, June 21. A French communique states: —"After bombardment to the north of the Aisne. the Germans attacked our position on a kilometre front. Large forces succeeded in gaining a footing in part of the first line trench enst of Vauxaillon. Another attempt south of Filain, on the salient in our line eastwards of Rozere Farm, was without result. The artillery duel is lively between Hurtebisc Farm and C'hevreux, an.l at the Verdun front, in the sectors at Vacherauville and Chambrettes Wood. {A. and N.Z. and Reuter.)
