RIFLE SHOOTING.

DXSTBICT ASSOCIATIDWGOOD ENTRIES. KEEN SHOOTING. The first day's shooting of the annual meeting of all Senior Uadets Territorials, Staff Corps and Rifle Clubs (all tAat come under the Defence Department) was opened under the auspices of the Auckland District Rifle Association at Penrose this morning. Each set has a set of prizes on their own, with the exception of the Staff Corps and Rifle "Clubs; who compete together in one set of matches. ° The Senior Cadets have £80 to shoot for, the Territorials £40, and the Rifle Clubs and Staff £32. When the competitions commenced the light was good, but a strong easterly wind blew across the range, having a great effect on the rifles, making them too hard to hold. The windage allowed for at 200 yards was about 10 inches, and at 300 yards a little over a foot. The entries for this' meeting surpassed all previous records, with the exception of Exhibition year. The Bay of Islands Senior Cadets, Grammar School, Technical College, 18th and 29th Companies of Senior Cadets, and the Pukekohe Senior Cadets were well represented. ' The great fight is for the Campbell Fours and seven gold medals, which are given annually by the Logan Campbell j Trust to encourage the shooting of the Cadets of the Auckland district. It is one of the best prizes given through-' out the Empire, and does more for the shooting of Senior Cadets than anything else. Captain Wallingford, as District Musketry Instructor, is conducting the meeting in a proper service manner, and at the same time is making it a holiday for the boys. Shooting at the '25yds range consists of four different practices, and embodies the elementary course for the Defence Forces. It enables the boys to see what value they are for the long ranges, and teaches them any faults in their rifles. Every I shot is a' lesson, there being no wastage. The Management Committee consists ; of Colonel G. A. Ward,' Major R. 6. Cox, '. Major M. N. Atkinson, Captains J. Hub--1 bard, F. W. Strong, R. Simpson, N. J. Ellingham, W. H. Shepherd, Company Sergeant Majors Eade and J. Anderson, , together with the staff appointed by the • Officer Commanding the District. ' A feature of the meeting is the great I assistance being rendered by four small , boys, members of St. Mary's Scouts. 1 " " ' r .
