RUSSIANS SLOWLY GAINING UPPER HAND.
HEAVY FIGHTING ON HUNDRED-MILE BATTLE-FRONT. ENEKT-S ATTE2CFT TO ANTICIPATE OFFENSIVE. LONDOX, October 6. T!ic Russian communiques are always reticent regarding battles which have not reached a decision, but there are indications tbat the Russians are slowly gaining the upper hand in Galicia and in Volhynia. It is estimated in Petrograd that yon Hindenburg ordered 600,000 reinforcements for the Kovel region. These troops initiated a series of violent eoimtcr-attttc'/s witt which General BrujsilofF had to deal. The battle-fronts of General Sakharoff and General Tcherbecheff are now nearly 100 miles long. They form the base of a triangle of which Lemberg is the apex. The latest fighting is reported on the upper reaches of the Zlota-Lipa and on the Naraiuvka, a tributary of the Gnita-Lipa, but it is not clear whether the Russians have actually forced the crossing of the Xaraiuvka. If they have done so they will be in the rear of the main bridgehead defending Halicz.
