A CERTIFICATED MARINER.
THE BERTHING OF OIL- STEAMERS. (To the Editor.* ' Sir, —In to-day's report of the Haribour Board meeting I notice the harbourmaster and traffic manager state that the Central wharf without eheds would be convenient for the berthing of oil ships, etc, instead of at Hobson and Queen's wharves. Quite recently the s.s. Port 'Nicholson, with a. cargo of oil, was berthed on the eastern side, city end, of Queen's wharf, which is contrary to a resolution passed a few years ago at the instigation of property owners and the Underwriters' Association, who ayerred at the time it was a menace to the city to do so, but evidently some resolutions are lost sight of for the sake of convenience. On September 1, 1916, I sent the following letter to the chairman of the Harbour Board, which Temaine unanswered, re fire on Port Nicholson: — "Dear think the above is a timdy warning to keep vessels or steamers with oil cargoes at the outer of wharf- If my memory serves mc rightly you have a minute on your books to this effect during the Hon. Mitchelson's chairman' ship."—l am, etc, P. VIRTUE.
