RECRUITING.

THE 23rd AND 24th QUOTAS. HOW AUCKLAND FILLS THE SHORTAGE. MORE RECRUITS WANTED. "The "district quotas for the 23rd and 24th draft, which are now announced, cast some light upon the additional task which hae been thrown upon. Auckland in connection with the-filling of the shortage of the 21st draft. . - : Last week it was announced that , the quota* of the' military district, under the new - grouping scheme, was 710 for: the 22nd draft, and this was-generally supposed to include an' extra number to compensate for the shortage in the one dispatched last month. Owing to the re-grouping of.-the districts it was difficult to make comparisons, - but the fact that Auckland No; 1 Group,: which ia now enlarged, had jumped from 256 to 405 suggested that once again the city and:suburban area was being made responsible for the lion's share in the task of ~ filling "the shortages. The quotas for the November and December drafts are as follows:—

23rd Draft 24thDraft. No.; 1 Group "205 285 No. 2 Gr0up.......... 64 63 N0.3 Group 6G 65 No. 4 Group 66 . 65 No-IT-^Gr0up........ 27 27 The latest figures show conclusively that the No. 1 groiip is/again, largely maJdng up the shortage - Next month the Auckland group is required to for-ward-110-men more-than -in December, and-as this surplus- is- towards-filling -the shortage of last month, it is apparent that although the No. 1 group cent more than its full contingent of men on that' occasion, and in eprte of the fact that the -new grouping system is supposed to make each group eolely responsible for its own obligations, the "city area is again required largely to make-lip the shortages of the entire district, which is estimated to amount to about-130 of 140.

"However, in view'of the fact that the machinery of the Military "Service Act. Ie not yet ready,' and that the "Dominion's obligations have got to be fulfilled, the No. 1 group, under the command of Captain G. Bust, Which, 80 ' far, has l never failed to send the required number of men, te making a big effort to comply with the demand made upon it. Recruiting is proceeding apace, and the men who had previously enlisted for the next draft are being eworn in to ensure a full- response.. -Ther rate of new enlistments, however, is not increasing to the extent that would abeolutery guarantee the eending of the 405 .men required from the group in a fortnight's time, and single men who are liable to be balloted for in the event of a shortage, and particularly those who are liable to be sent into camp under the Fainiry Shirkers'" section, are urged to enlist at once, and thereby escape the odium of being -called up particular system Men who have enlisted and have been accepted, but have not yet been sworn in, arc-again remindedrthat it ie neceasary to take the oath%t~the recruiting eUtion some time before Friday, on doin f * h, « h ftW'.»fl| r««ye *voueherfor on, day's mihtary pay (five tftiUinge). and a ticket of leave ap to t£ey^^nl£ he *»^
