ALONG THE WHOLE FRONT
t MACKENSEN LEADS THE ENEMY GREECE HEARING INTERVENTION GERMANS EXPECT A DECLARATION The Rumanians lost no time in following up their declaration of war by crossing the Austrian frontier. They chose the southern angle of the salient formed by the frontier into their line, and are attacking Transylvania through the passes of the Alps in the vicinity of Kronstadt. Yon Mackensen is in command of the armies opposing the Rumanians, who have, it is reported, 800,000 men in their first line and- 300,000 trained reservists to follow up. The actions so far reported are only of an outpost nature. King Constantine has warned the Kaiser that he has about reached the limit of his ability to foil the will of his people, and that the feeling in favour of the Entente is growing greater every day. The Greek Commander-in-Chief has gone to Salonika, evidently to endeavour to reach an understanding which will efface the adverse impressions created by his proGerman predecessor. The British have spent the past day or two in consolidating their positions on the Somme battlefront and in making some progress in the Thiepval area. They have also heavily bombarded the enemy's line in the Neuve Chapelle sector. The Russians are still fighting on the west bank of the Stokhod, where they have repulsed several enemy attacks. They have also made satisfactory progress in the Asian theatre. The French continue to make progress on the Verdun front at Thiaumont work, while they have repelled strong attacks at Fleury and Fort Vaux.
