WINTER GARDEN SCHEME.
NOW TTNDEB WAT. THE .EXHIBITION PROFITS. Tie joint committee of the Works Committee of the City Council and of the Auckland Exhibition authorities, which was "set up to consider the manner in which the profits from the Exhibition handed over to the City Council for bcautification of the Domain should be employed, met recently, and its reectnmendatione were reported to the City Council last evening. Its report suggested that the proposed, winter garden should be erected on the site recommended by the City Engineer, formerly occupied by the Exhibition concert hall. The chairman (Mr (.J. Elliot) had outlined the proposals, the plans of "which .had been put into tile hands of the City Engineer to prepare. The Engineer, however, .had not yet been able to do this, and, under these circumstances, he had. with 'the concurrence of. the Mayor, obtained the voluntary assistance of Mr Gummer, of the Town Planning League (acting in conjunction with the City Engineer), in preparing a scheme, by -which the winter garden would bn erected out of the Exhibition surplus, and also a duplicate house connected by a pergola, and a 'hothouse, which could be erected at some future period when the money was available. The committee recommended tho adoption of the whole scheme, and authorised the. architect to call for tenders. The committee also expressed ite thanks to Mr Glimmer for bte valuable services. After more detailed description of the scheme had been supplied by members of the committee, the Mayor observed that the scheme was going to involve a . considerable financial responsibility for the' Council if carried to completion. Mr G. Knight said he realised the Council's obligation to the Exhibition Commissioners, but ihe wanted to know ■when the authority of the special committee ■would terminate. Mr H. N. Bagnall thought the Council should hestiate 'before they embarked upon the scheme, owing to its possibilities in regard to expenditure. He had no objectiou to the old scheme, which limited the cost to the £3000 in hand. The Mayor replied that the scheme left it for the Council to determine at a future date as to whether the scheme would be extended. The proposed building would cost £3000, and would be then complete in itself, although the general design of the scheme was such that it could be elaborated in future. The Teport was adopted.
