THE GOLDFIELDS.
t MLNING RENTS. REDUCTION ASKED FOR. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WAIHI, Monday. A petition is being prepared by those interested in the welfare of the mining industry asking the Government to reduce the rent ou mining properties to 1, per acre; also that more practical assistance be given in the shape of! grants, etc. Mining men are of the opi- | nion that the (lovernment should give I more encouragement in t&c matter of j developing the field. The small pros- I pector should be assisted a great deal i more than he is at present. The. petition referred to will be presented by the two members representing the Goldfields, and is. in addition to the deputation organised to wait upon the Minister of Mines. ALLUVIAL CLAIMS. A mining man with considerable Australian experience recently visited the ' Auckland goldiields. He predicts a pros-1 perous future for the Coromandel stuic- j ing and dredging claims. He was impressed with the large amount of tail- I ings in sight on the Wnihi-Paeroa Gold- i Extraction Company's river claim, and I is of the opinion, taking into consideration past results, and the possibility of | improvements to the treatment plant, | that there is a considerable amount of j gold yet to be won from this property | alone. It is asserted in this connection | that in the early days the old. treatment j plants, run in conjunction with the varl-! ous mining properties, lost quite 25 per I cent, of the gold previous to the introduction of the cyanide process.
