CHKISTCHURCH, this day. Gunner Xeave, of the mounted machine ] gun section oi the Syasaland Imperial Service Contingent, writing to his parents in ..Chrislchurch from Karribih, states that he had a lovely trip up the coast from Capetown in a transport, calling at all ports sn route. The.contingent disembarked at the port of Chindc, in Portuguese territory, and then went up the Zambesi River in paddle steamers for some 200 odd miles, passing through plantations of tea, coffee, tobacco and cotton. Disembarking at a settlement called Chindib, the train was taken to Limbc, where the greatest hospitality was received. Gunner Neave states that as far as ho could see, this part of the. country was a purely Scotch settlement, his mothertongue being spoken on every hand. The contingent travelled to Zoraba, where a rest was made for a day or two. Horses could not live in such a climate, and the whole distance had to be covered on foot. . Each man had a boy to carry his J' ', and there were also, boys carrying £°...'kine guns and all provisions. For- a «■—■:> of less than 300 there were. 5,000. .i-ricrs.'N The force journeyed farther t.;:th from Zomba. and arrived at.Ka-!r-iga. Two days later-they went out -i patrol to call upon the Germans, and .'ound them at home. •' We got our guns to work," says Gunner Neave, "and things were quite lively for half an hour or so, but owing to the high-firing of the enemy, none but a native scout was injured."
