HOSPITAL SATURDAY.
AUXILIARY FUND COLLECTION. CAMPAIGN IN CITY AND SUBURBS. GENEROUS RESPONSE BY THE , PUBLIC. The institution of "Hospital Auxiliary Sunday," which has occurred annu- < ally during the past four years, has been . varied for 1916, and so it comes about : that a street collection is being made to-day. In making the change the promoters believed that they would meet with better results and so place their organisation in a position with the increasing demands upon its funds. So far the results have justified the expectation. The object of the fund is to relieve distress caused by the absence of breadwinners in hospital. It aims mainly at helping women and children. Formerly this work fell to church societies and kindred organisations, but a feeling arose in favour of a combination of effort. The Hon. A. M. Myers and the Mayor of the day are the trustees, ai* an executive committee of twelve visit the Hospital every Sunday all the year round to inquire into cases of distress. They dispense immediate relief in necessitous instances, and forward the vouchers to the trustees. ln working up the street collection the committee applied to various churches and charitable institutions to provide collectors. The response was so liberal that in one suburb alone (Ponsonby) 100 ladies are carrying on the work of collecting. There are 50 in Grey Lynn and a similar number in Parnell, while attention is also being given, on a sim_ir scale, to the city and other auburie. In addition to the street collection a ho_ie-to J house canvass is also being made. Tbe campaign has been very thoroughly -organised by the city and suburban com_xttees. all of which ate in touch with the central station and the hon. orgr.n_rng secretary (Mr. P. E. Dro_god). Collecting in Newmarket took place yesterday under the supervision of the Mayoress, Mrs. McColl. A sum of between £30 and £40 was raised in the streets, and further sums 'have to come as the fruits of personal canvass. Today Mrs. McColl took her energetic committee oi ladies to Oneannga, and also to the races at Epsom. The names of those chiefly responsible for the organising of the campaign are as follows:— Central.—Building lately occupied by Bon Marche, Queen Street. Mr. A. L. Eagleton. chairman of Committee.
