A STEAMER'S DISAPPEARANCE
ENCOUNTER WITH SUBMARINE. ""CREW ESCAPE ASHORE. AND ARE CAPTURED BY MOORS (Times and Sydney Sun Services.) • LONDON, February 4. Survivors of the steamer Wbodfield, 3,584 tons, who have arrived "at Plymouth, state that a German submarine attacked ' the steamer 14 "miles east of Gibraltar, and "peppered" her with shells. The steamer's guns were manned, but the submarine kept out of range and continued firing. Captain - Hughes and the other officers had a narrow escape. ■ The Arab firemen deserted the stokehold, and the chief engineer and his assistants stoked for two hours,"- A shell burst in the stokehold. ■ When eight .of the crew were killed and fourteen wounded, the captain, realising that further resistance -was hopeless, took to the boats and abandoned the ship, which the submarine torpedoed. The crew reached' the North African coast, and were captnred by the Moors, who released them after a heavy ransom hod been paid.
