—— i ACCUMULATING PROFITS. i - ( SAFEGUARDING BRITISH , INTERESTS. . < THE ENEMY TRADING BILL. ' ( (Received 1-30 pjn.) i ——— i LONDON, January 21. In the House of Commons the Rt. Hon. ' Geo. Cave (Solicitor-General), in moving the second reading of .the Trading with the Enemy Bill, said that many enemy businesses were still being carried on in Britain, and were accumulating profits i which would benefit the enemy after the war in the economic struggle. For ex- ' ample, two enemy subject; forming a company could own ships and have all the advantages of British traders, and ' accumulate profits during the war. Under > the bill the Board of Trade would have ' the power to exterminate and wind up i enemy businesses. There was no desire to confiscate enemy property, but British ■ property was being treated high-handedly ; by Germany, and it was desirable to hold < enemy property in Britain until they knew how the British were going to be treated, and to compensate them, if necessary, out of the enemy property.
