MORE GERMAN ROMANCES

ABOUT BAHALONG INCIDENT. UNRELIABLE EVIDENCE. COPENHAGEN, January 21. The London correspondent of the Copenhagen paper "Aftenposten" gives another version of the sinking of a German submarine by the- British auxiliary cruiser Baralong. He says that the German submarine attacked an English ship, upon which there were American muleteers. The latter took refuge in the lifetoats. When the Baralong sank the submarine, the latter's crew took shelter on the merchantman. The muleteers then returned to the ship and wreaked their fury on the crew of the submarine. The correspondent adds: "It must not be forgotten that the evidence published in Germany was taken in America from witnesses who received a fee, and were not cross-examined. Inquiry would disclose the above facts." DEBATE IN- THE REICHSTAG. REPRISALS THREATENED. A SOCIALIST DEMURS. (Times and Sydney Sun Services.) (Received 10 a.m.) LONDON, January 21. In the Reichstag, Herr Zimmermann, on behalf of the Government, thanked the Reichstag and the nation for the unanimous expression of horror at the Baralong incident, and assured members that the Government would find the right way and means to punish sharply and emphatically those responsible for this horrible English deed. Herr Ledebour (Socialist) pointed out that reprisals-werevdoiible edged weapons. He hoped "that the" Government' would not go beyond '-the' limiffr' b'i'submarine warfare fixed after the LUsitania incident, and would adhere to the promise not to torpedo merchantmen without warning. ••■;' • ■-' A section of the Socialists applauded: ; the speech. : ... . --• ' The Press enthusiastically endorses the Government's prcrinisfeYpf , 'jeprlsais;,'^,, ':';
