CONFISCATED LIQUOR.
HROHABLE WINDFALL FOR HOSPITAL At the raid on tho Mansion House, Kawau Island, the liquor seized consisted of an 18gal cask of ale, 51 pint bottles and eight quart bottles of ale, eeven bottles of port wine, three of brandy, two of rum, four of schnapps, one of sherry, and a email quantity of whisky. After the hearing of the case to-day, in which defendant was convicted, when Sub-Inspector Mellvency requested a magisterial ordeT for the confiscation of the liquor, Mr J. R. Reed, K.C. (for defendant), asked that the liquor like sherry, brandy, etc., obviously used in cooking for trifles, etc., be returned, but the reply was that the law made no provision therefor. Mr F. V. Frazer, S.M., remarked that it would be a pity to destroy such a quantity of Very good liquor, and asked if provision could not be made to have it handed over to the hospital. The Sub-Inspector stated that he would convey hie Worship's recommendation to that effect to the ofßcere •of thte Department which dealt with confiscated liquors. Hitherto, he said, it had since 1909 or 1910 been customary to destroy such liquor, or to have it sold at auction.
