THE WANGANUI RIVER.

WORKE IN PROGRESS

DAMAGE FROM RECENT FLOODS.

In an interim report to the Wanganui River Trust, the chairman (Mr. f. D. Cummins) indicates that considerable difficulty is being experienced in keeping portions of the channel clear. "I have to report," he says, "that continued freshes have materially interfered with the repairs to the walls, and one considerable flood at the top of the river damaged work that was in progress. On occasions, after freshes, the river has fallen very quickly, and drift shingle has been found in otherwise good channels, which seriously interferes with navigation, more especially 0 n the section of the river between Taumarunui and Okupae; indeed, the foreman's report goes to show that the work on this section of the river is most strenuous, and difficulties in navigation are above' Okupae; and the expenditure there is Probably as much for the 14 miles from Taumarunui to Okupae as from there on to Pipiriki. The question of making the terminus of the river traffic, so far as the Trust is concerned, at a point below Taumarunui is worth taking into serious consideration. . . The results of the recent floods show conclusively that the damage to the constructed works and the disarrangement of the river service have been most serious between the points I have mentioned."
