CAREERS OF THE FALLEN. CORPORAL W. G. DOWNING. Corporal W. G Downing, whose death from wounds is reported, was a son of Mrs K. Downing, of Anderson's Bay, Dunedin. He was for some time employed on the reporting staff of the Dunedin "Evening Star," and afterwards joined the staff of the "North Otago Times" Company. Private Hawken was wounded shortly after the landing at Gallipoli. shot through both thighs by a sniper. He. was treated in hospital at Alexandria and afterwards in England. PRIVATE A. E. ST. G. LONG. rrivntc Alfred Eric St. George Long, Auckland Battalion, who is returning invalided on the Ruahine, is tlie youngest son of the late Mr J. F. Long, for many years postmaster at Patea, and of Mrs Long. 34, Cromwell Road. Mount Eden. Prior to enlistment he was employed at Messrs Arthur Cleave and Company's. Private Long was an enthusiastic yachtsman anil motor cyclist. Uc enlisted with | the main body of the Expeditionary I Forces. PRIVATE PERCY WALDEN. Private Percy Walden, who is returning invalided by the Maheno, is a son of Mrs C. A. Walden. Pokeno. aud was born at Moutoa, Foxton, in 1895. After leaving school he took up storckeeping. He was a member of the Mauku Senior Cricket Club and played in all tho senior grade matches. He left New Zealand as a member of the lflth (Waikato) Company with the main body of the Expeditionary Force, and was in the thick of the lighting, meeting with many very narrow escapes. He had been in the trenches for seven or eight weeks when he contracted enteric fever and was sent to hospital at Alexandria. DR. K. MaeCORMICK. dipt. Kenneth MaeCormiek, N.Z.M.C., medical officer with the Auckland Mounted Rifles, is returning to New Zealand by the Tahiti. He is 24 years of age and the only son of Judge MacCormiek, of the Native Lands Department. Dr MaeCormiek is an Auckland boy, a pupil of the Grammar School, whence he matriculated and passed the medical preliminary examination. He was in his fifth year as a student at the Medical School, Otago University, when war broke out, and he immediately volunteered for service. The University Council provided an opportunity for the final year students to sit for their diplomas a few months earlier than usual, and Kenneth MaeCormiek was one of the successful candidates. He was given a commission as lieutenant in the Field Ambulance and was afterwards tached to the Auckland Mounted Rifles as their medical officer in Gallipoli. A letter from his 0.C., Colonel Mackesy, indicates that Dr MaeCormiek had endeared himself to all in the regiment and had worked himself to a standstill. He was ultimately invalided to Egypt, and while there was operated on for appendicitis. GUNNER \V. A. KNOX. Gunner William Andrew Knox, a wellknown member of the West End Rowing Club, is reported to have been slightly wounded. He is a son of Mr W. A. Knox, of 48, John Street, Ponsonby. and is 22 years of age. He was educated at Newton East School, and joined the firm of Sargood. -Son and Ewcn, eight years ago, leaving to enlist with the main body of the Expeditionary Force. Gunner Knox was a member of the Amateur Athletic Club, St. James Hockey Club, Newton Rangers Football Club, and the West End Rowing Club. He was treasurer of the West End Rowing Club for two years. He had been in the firing line | since April last. He is one of three J brothers who have enlisted. The eldest Scr-t.-Major R. V. A. Knox, is attached to the Ist Battalion, N.Z. Kille Brigade, j and the younger brother is now in camp . with the* Engineers for the Tenth Reinforcements. Gunner W. A. Knox joined "A" Battery live years ago and was trained as a specialist. I
