CHRISTMAS RECITALS.

«— +— The organ recital at the Town Hall on Christmas Night attracted a large audience. Mr. Maughnn Barnctt, the city organist, presented a delightful programme, which was received with warm demonstrations of approval. Mr. Barry Coney assisted with two songs— •'Nazareth" and "The Trumpeter"—and was heartily applauded. The programme presented by Mr. Barnett at the organ was as follows: — "Festival March" (Best), "Lullaby and Pastorale (Lemare). "Fantasie ori Christmas, Hymntime" (Barnctt), "March of the! Magi Kings" (Dubois), "Reve Angeliquo" (Rubinstein), "Adeste Fideles" (Reading). At St. Matthew's Church an enjoyable recital of Christmas music was given. At the organ Mr. Phillpot gave the iirst movement of the overture to the "Messiah." and also played "The Tastoral Symphony" and "the Hallelujah Chorus." The following also contributed to the programme: —Miss E. Watson, Miss Laura Walker, Miss Pearl Dawson, Miss Alice Andrews. Mr. Charles Mountain. Master Walter Brough, the ladies of the choir. Master R. Newberry, Mr. F. W. Brough, and the choir. The choir gave an excellent rendering of a number of appropriate anthems and carols. The Garrison Artillery Band, under the conductorship of Lieutenant O. F. Cater, gave a concert in Albert Park on Christinas Night. The programme contained varied and popular music, and was much appreciated. In presenting its verdict at Blejiheim the other day, the jury, which found an accused guilty of theft and false pretences, expressed its disapproval of the readiness with which cheques were cashed by business people. In the ease mentioned the cheque was not even dated. His Honor said he quite approved of the jury's comment, and remarked that the "ease with which perfect strangers were able to cash cheques was the cause of a grea-t deal of the crime that cavme before the court.
