LABOUR SHORTAGE.
SHIPPING DELAYED IN SYDNEY. Right up till the last minute on Thursday last it was feared that the mail steamer Niagara was to be held up in Sydney 011 account of shortage of crew. Several departments on the ship were affected, but by dint of much inquiry a complement was at last secured, and the veteel got away for Auckland on time. It was learnt on inquiry aboard this morning that the position in Sydney is assuming serious proportions. In days gone by there was nearly always a surplus of labour about the wharves to fill any vacancy that might oc.ur aboard a vessel ready to sail,-but the war has swallowed this surplus up, and the shipowner has now to go further afield. When the Niagara left Sydney there were a considerable number of big Home liners looking in vain for men to complete their ciews. The shortage is noticed particularly in the stokehold, firemen and trimmers being scarce, as well as troublesome, just now. In this respect the Niagara is at an advantage, the introduction of oil fuel having eliminated the stokehold staff.
