A GALLANT ACTOR
WINS VICTORIA CROSS IN EAST AFRICA CAMPAIGN. (Received 1.10 p.m.) LONDON. December 26. Lieutenant Dartiiell, a member of the Legion of Frontiersmen, was awarded the Victoria Cross for most conspicuous bravery on September 3 at Maktau, in Fast Africa. During an engagement of the mounted in ft l nt ry the enemy's black troops were murdering our wounded. Lieut. Dartnell was himself wounded, but insisted upon being left behind in the hope of saving some of the rest. He lost his life in a most gallant attempt to save his comrades. Lieut. Dartnell is believed to be the first actor to be given I lie Victoria Cross.
