TERRIFIC BATTLE RAGING AT DVINSK.
GERMANS PAYING TWO TO ONE IN LOSSES

LONDON, September 2C. The "Times" correspondent at Dvinak, xvho spent three days on the fight ing front, reports that a terrific battle is raging.
The Russians ore holding Dvir.sk by an excellent line of trenches three deep. The first line was taken many times, but by counter attacks it was recaptured.
The Germans have twice or thrice the Russian strength, and in enormous superiority in guns. Undoubtedly the Germans arc paying two to one in losses. The nature of the country is ideal for defensive purposes.
A romn,unique says: "A Gorman detachment crossed the left bank of the Middle Yilin, in the Vilna district. We sank a bridge of boats near Poratchie, north cf Slonim, capturing the Germans who previously crossed. We inflicted considerable losses on the enemy sonth of Slonim, aa he was only able to throw small parties into the firing line."
The Germans have cut the Vilna railways except the Vitchy line southwards. A great battle is expected in the Lida district, 00 miles south of Vilna. The Germans arc only leaving a screen of troops south of Dvmsk to prevent the Russians reinforcing their troops in the Vilna region.
General yon Eichorn's troops crossed the river near Vilna. Another body of Germans crossed tho Beresovka, below the Taoks Lakes, the outlet from Vilna being thu3 narrowed.
