GOLF.

FIXTURES. WAITEMATA CLfB August 21—First Hound Cham, l„:is :.p and 0 Grade Haodlrap The chief item of interest in golfing circles last week was the final of the Auckland ladies' rhn-nipAonahip. This mau-h was played at iMiddlemore on Tuesday last under ideal weather conditions, and the course was found in good order. The Dualists were Miss G. Gome and Miss M. Alison, and. as both players have been showing good form of late, quite a number of enthusiast* followed

the game. Miss Alison raised the hopes of hi-r admirers by winning the first hole :n brilliant style, but unfortunately she was not able to keop this good form up. and Miss Gorrie, by consistent, good golf, wad 4 up al the turn. The natch was over at tbe thirteenth. Mis« Gorrio winning by the good margin of 6 up and 3 to play. Miss Gorrio has now won tho club championship on no lew* than llvo occasion*.

The junior championship of the Auckland Club was also played, and this provided a very close match. tMrs A. A. Martin only winning from Mis* Henderson on the eighteenth green. Mrs Martin in very keen, atd this win will no doubt give her more confidence in future.

Tho weather on Saturday was as bad as anything we htivc experienced in Auckland this season Those few enthusiasts who journeyed to Middlcmorc found conditions very trying, the easterly gale making some of the rroles very difficult. The long ninth was a siog right from the tee, and I doubt if anyone succeeded ill beating bogey Oil Saturday.

At Wnitcnmta the monthly medal drew a good entry. The winner proved to be 1". S. S'.ierrilT, white card read 83—1(3—77. which, considering the weather conditions and sloppy state of the course, was a really good performance. His nearest opponent was 11. H. Bayly, with 100—22 — 87. lv conjunction with the match, the second qualifying round of the championship was played. The final of the captain's prize, between B. PhilscJi and A. M. Uowden, was also played, and this resulted in an easy win for A. M. Uowden by 7 up and 6 to play.

At iMaungakiekic the only match for the day was tbe final of the captain's prize, between F. M. Browning and H. L. Rees. When this compwtrtion was started these players were each on the 22 handicap, so on Saturday the--? was no difference in handicap. Browning reduced his handicap by six strokes quite recently, and vi this match he played will up to his best form, quite outclassing his opponent, the match being finished on the twelfth green—B up and G to play.

I understand that so far no decision has been arrived at as to how the tie between A. Fairburn and F. Brow-niug in the B. O. Gardner Cup competition is to be decided.

I noticed quite a numher of golfers in the rankß of the Parnell nnd Ellerslie branohes of the iS'atioiial Reserve on Saturday. These two companies attended at the Ellerslie racecourse, where they were put through some manoeuv•ring by Lieut-Colonel Cumminff. I rather fancy that the golfers of the company missed their faithful caddies after tho final charge had been made, for their rifles by this time had become very heavy. In ffpite of the wretched weather the manoeuvres were most interesting, and when another opportunity offers' I -feel sure there will be no shirkers.

The first round of the Maungakickie ladies' championship is set down for to-morrow. A bogey competition will also bo played, the proceeds of which will be given to a fund to assist the poor of Auckland. The final of tlie Wartemata ladies' championship will be played this week, the contestants being Mrs Gudgeon and Miss Goudic.

MACNGAKIEKJE LADIES' CLUB. The following Is the' draw for the bogey competition, to be played on Wednesday—Miss Moginle plays Miss Ridings, Miss Abbott plays Mrs. Ridings, Mrs. Trice plays Miss Martin, Miss B. Y*ung plan Miss Stacpoole. Mrs. Fenton plays Mrs. Brlffault, Miss McGovern plays Miss Lever, Miss Cooke plays Miss Wallace, Miss Aldcrton plays Mrs. Ball. Miss I. Walker plays Miss Wilson, Miss \ouge Tdays Miss Grove, Miss Johnston plays Miss Sterrlcker, Miss M. Macfarlane Plays Miss Neill, Miss Hall a bye. Tbe first round of the championship will also be played on Wednesday.
