BRITISH "MAGNIFICENT SURPRISE" IN FLANDERS.
FIERCE ATTACK FOILS GERMAN PLAN. REINFORCEMENTS ALL NEEDED FOR FIRING LINE. AMSTERDAM, June 20. During the nine days that the frontier of Belgium and Holland wae closed 400.000 German troops traversed Belgium, of which 300,000 were sent into the fightiug-liiic where French ptessurc wne dangerous. One hundred thousand, with 200 heavy guns, were held in reserve lit L'ourtrui and Roulers in the hope that they would have an opportunity of breaking through the Allies' lines, but during the last three days they hnve been Hurriedly sent to defend the German trenches at La Bassee and Ypres against a British attack in force. This magnificent surprise smashed the enemy's plan. A German official communique states that the British north-west of La Bassee suffered a new defeat, the attackers being annihilated, and only a few escaping.
