The "Central Nexrs" Dunkirk correspondent says that the French offensive from Notre Dame de Lorette to Neuville squeezed 150,000 Germans into a front of 4J miles, where they are being sacrificed, despite a despairing effort to save the remnants of the defensive system, the French artillery wiping out whole ranks of the enemy. Heavy artillery, mortars, grenades, and aerial torpedoes are being utilised, v and an almost continuous bombardment is automatically followed by bayonet charges when the Germans are incapable of resisting. A single mine shaft had 250 German defenders, of whom 200 were wiped out, the rest being tnken prisoner. A stream in the Souchez village was blocked with Herman dead. German heavy artillery continues its bombardment, und our advance is proving costly. One shell struck the village of Marequi_. where there were 100 billeted, the shell killing SO.
