STRUGGLE FOR THE TRENCHES
TURKISH ATTACKS REPULSED FRENCH PROGRESS IN THE VOSGES BRITISH ADVANCE IN FLANDERS ENEMY'S GREAT ATTACK IN CALICIA A gallant attack on a British division was made by a body of Turks, led by a German officer, on Tuesday night. The Britishers were ready, however, and few of the enemy reached the parapet of the trench, while those who got that far were bayoneted. On Saturday night the Turks, in strong force, attacked a trench captured by the British. The defenders retired, but enfiladed the trench during the night, and retook it with the bayonet in the morning. The French have made important progress in the Vosges. where they have seized the heights dominating the valley of the Fecht, and have captured several villages formerly held by the enemy. In the Galician area the Germans are bringing up immense forces, and the Russians are still giving ground.
