OBJECTED TO MOTHER-IN-LAW
A rather unusual feature of a ease :, t the Magistrate's Court this morning, in which a vvife sought maintenance .from her husband, was that the man neitncr smoked, dunk, nor gambled. According to his statement, the mother-in-law wa.s the cause of the trouble in his home, hut alter bearing the evidence, his Worship expressed the opinion that the man was fortunate in possessing such a good mother-in-law. and the case ended in her being made custodian of tin- children. 'The defendant- name was John l'ercival (iray, and his wife asked for separation and maintenance, alleging persistent cruelty. Gray pleaded not guilty. The usual recriminatory statements were made by husband and wife, but finally the latter stud. "He married mc under the name of .Marshall." In answer to questions by the Court, Gray said he was born in Sydney in ISS.T, and married here under the name of .lohn Percivnl Marshall. Mr. Kettle: Inilcr a false name. Witness replied that Marshall had been his. name for such a long; time that be got married under it. but not with any wrong intent. Mr. Kettle: When did you change your name? Witness: About 12 years ago. .Mr. Kettle: Your true name is John Pcrcival Gray, and you admit you made a false declaration when you married?— 1 did, sir. Finally. Mr. Kettle granted a temporary separation order with maintenance at the rate of 25/ per week, and the grandmother was given guardianship of the child. "Will my mother-in-law have any of that allowance?" asked the defendant, and then added, "I would sooner cut my tin oat." to which Mr. Matthews replied. "Very well, cut it."
