"WHOLESALE WASTE"

IN THE USE OF WATER. WILL LAST OUT WITH CARE. The position in Auckland to-day with regard to the water supply i ßj in tSie Mayor's opinion, that while there is every need for care, there is no cause for undue anxiety. He referred at the Council meeting last night to the occurrence of seven and a-half months of drought, remarking that, in such unprecedented circumstances, no exception could be taken to the reasonable prudence entailed in stopping all garden supplies through the hose. For the next 50 or 00 days the city could carry on, even nt the present rate of consumption, but long before that time expired the authorities would, if necessity arose, take counsel again. He deprecated the wholesale waste that was going on, and urged tliat if people would be ordinarily careful ■with the water there need be no fear of famine.

Mr P. J. Neherny made a telling point in connection with -line water restrictions by drawing attention to the inconsistency of prohibiting city consumers from using the hose, while, in boroughs which took their water from the city, there was no restriction whateverIt was explained that the other local bodies bad been asked to carry out the same, regulation with regard to the use of water for gardens, and it was understood that this was being done.
