The brood mare Signet, dam of Tattoo, : died recently while foaling to Elyslan. The foal survives, and an effort is to be made , to rear lt on a foster mother. Although it has been stated that A. Oliver is to ride Postillion iv the C.J.C Stewards' Handicap, it is understood that the horseman named will steer Chortle in that event, while C. Price will have the mount on rosttllion. There If nothing like getting in early when you waDt to secure a rider's services. J. O'Shea, who had to*- mount on Multiplicity at. the recent Toverty Bay meeting, .has already been engaged to ride the daughter of Multifld in the next C.J.C. Winter Cup. With a general exodus of jockeys foe Chrlstcburch after to-day's racing at Ellerslie, it looks as If owners wonld have some difficulty in securing suitable riders for the second day of the Auckland Racing Club's Spring Meeting. The three-year-old colt Waverlcy. purchased in the South last year by Messrs. Richards and Westnn, is not to be asked to carry silk until the Auckland Trotting Club's Summer Meeting. WavcTley has been nominated for tho New Brighton Derby. The Bonlforni ally Mia Cara, which won the Spring Trial Plate at Trentham. and which was expected to run prominently in the C.J.C. Oaks, went amiss recently, and was not taken South with F. Tillcy's team. This is hard luck for the popular Wanganui sportsman Mr. "Wirl Tokcna,'" for the filly was in great heart, and looked like picking up a decent stake at an early date. The question of romplimentary tickets has been giving some of the Taranaki clubs some concern, and recently the Stratford Club endeavoured! to got a conference to disenss the question of getting some degree of uniformity in the matter. The Egmont Racing flub, the first club to dlscnra the matter, decided to take no action. The well known cross-country horseman i A. -T. McFUnn is so deservedly popular that he will carry the best wishes of all for the future happiness of himself and his brl'le. The New Zealand Cup candidate Warstep is reported to have made a lot of friends for the two mile race as a result of her gallop -on -Saturday morning last. The daughter of Martian set a solid race over the mile and a-half. running the first half mile in ols. six furlongs in 1.16 2-5. the mile in 1.13 2-5, and the mile and a-half in 2.35. Warstep is reported to have pulled up splendidly, showing no signs of distress. I and as she was carrying over her Cup weigirt, her effort is said to hare been a brilliant one J The withdrawal of Expect from the New Zealand Cnp will be a big blow to early backers of doubles, etc., for the sou of Advance has practically been favourite from the time the weights first appeared. Expect was racing well this season, bis performance In the Wellington Champion Plate being a most meritorious one, and on paper the Cup looked a real good thing for him. The "Highden"-owned horse does not appear to have broken down badly, end a short rest may "see him all right again, in which case there is every probability of his being seen out in the Auckland Cup next month. The sensation of the week at Addington was the work out of Adelaide Direct, one ,of the Australian team in M. Edwards' charge. The visitor was sprinted over two I separate quarters at a fast gait, and then covered a half-mile at a great pace. A Christehurcb writer talking after the work . out with a local trainer who has been a . regular attendant at the track for years, > tbe latter stated that Adelaide Directs work out was the fastest he had ever seen, : with the exception of an effort by 0.V.M., who was once responsible for a half-mile in 1.2. Adelaide Direct does not impress one when doing slow work, but once put to it she becomes a veritable pacing machine. Although tbe Australian mare was responsible for sneh phenomenal work out. she was hot actually driven ont over the last thirty yards.
