HOCKEY.
The Auckland and Taraity seecond grade teams met at Avondale last Saturday, and beTth teams, with a win to their credit from the previous Saturday, started off at a great pace, but evenness of the ground can-red the forwards -to over-run the ball, and Auckland gained an advantage in adapting themselves to the ground early in the game, while the blues tried pooo much speculating, with the result that Auckland: had a chance to clear. The 'Varsity forward line, which was the faster of the two, made play very exciting through L. Atark. their speedy right-wing, and Blake, on the left, were both considerably hampered!. Roth half-lines gave good displays, and ail showed cleean stick work, their returning of Ure ball to the forwards beiug very good, In the full-beack line Auckland clearly had the advantage, and this was the chief explanation of the score, 'Varsity having few opportunities in the circle. -For 'Varsity tiro two wings and 'Player stood out in the forwards, while Haase. at 'bully, and Peglor. righit-wing, were most prominent for Auckland, Pegler malring many good runs with the ball, and centring well at the right time. A very fast and interesting game, finishpd in Auckland's favour by thrpc to nil. T_p following shows the respective position of teams in the five grades of hockey championships:—
