The report on army exercise, 1013, gives a tledcri|iUoD ol and criucismi ou tbe manoeuvres of the Home Army Iα Septeiuiier, 1018. Two topics ol the report have 'ticca received in mc liistrict Headquarters library,, and it is suggested thai otocers of mc district sliouiu study tue contents. It may be noted iv passing that the Auckland Aliliiary lilstrk-t Library is controlled ov a cvuiiruttoc composed ox tbe <>.<-•. OistoCt, the U.S.H., the A.A. aud yjM.O., tue Ox , . 31.X. "SVaite, 15th {.North Auckland) Regiment, has been promoted to be lieutenant, and tbe appointment of Second 'Lieutenant W. A. Bwvrring in tbe same regiment bas l>een confirmed. It Is just as well to get into the habit of calling people and things by tbeir right names, if, indeed, you are not one of those hopeless people who talk about Mrs Doctor Jones, aod a mayoress, and a lady chairman, and so on. For instance: "The Band of toe Third (or any other) Regiment," not "the regimental band"; "tae Uev. Wm. Smith, chaplain to the forces," not 1 "Chaplain-Captain Smith" or "CaptainChaplain Smith." It bas not yet bsren decided tbat offenders in these instances will he liable to capital punishment, but tbey will be convicted of bad form, which carries its own punishment.
Employers of labour are now belnc exercised in mind by tbe applications of employees requiring leave to attend camp. Most employers enough, bnt some do not find' Hβ dates fixed for tbe camp quite suitable. The unwilling ones will no donbt be convinced of the necessity of avoidinc the penalty for refnsing leave. For the benefit of employers, It may be stated that this year practically tUe whole of the Territorials in tbe district are expected to go into camp simultaneously at Hautapu, where, during the course of their training, they will be Inspected by General Sir lan Hamilton. Cadets are not required to attend camp. The compulsory period of camp is seven clear days, exclusive of time occupied in travelling to and from camp. Attendances for tbe first four days is voluntary, except In the case of men who have not completed tbe regulation number of parades for the year. Most of the mounted men will be putting in the extra four days. Aβ the troops whose duties are to man the coastal forts would obviously be wasting time at a camp 1n the Wallcato. the Garrison Artillery Terltorials have the distinction of belnp the only companies not involved in tbe Hautapu camp. The three companies of the division bare already put Iα their unim* i training under canves-
Last Saturday the fonr companies of the "C.R.0." thoroughly enjoyed their outing oa foil-day regimental parade at Elleralte. Colonel C. T. Major, O.C. Infantry Brigade, Inspected the regiment in company-in-attack operations. One-tree Hill was the objective, and the Orangi Estate was the field of campaign. Two companies went out, while the other two watched (and criticised), and then the positions were reversed. Leaving the Ellerslie Station, three companies formed up on each side of the road, while one company, under Captain Alderton (Instructor in Infantry Duties), went through as an advance party to give a practical demonstration of how this operation should be carried out. The band of the regiment was also out on parade, and played the paine (and sweet music, tooi. to everyone's great satisfaction.
Two well known secondary schools in the Dominion have now tried the plan of handing over the school corps to the Defence authorities for n week's special training in ramp, and in each ease it haa been a sigual success. The scheme was first adopted at Wnngnnui. and Mr. E. A. Belcher, headmaster of Christ's College (Oliristchurehj stilted recently that he was so convinced of its wisdom, that the same course would be adopted for the cadets of his school. The cum)) was held on the school football ground, and practically the whole upper school, including day boys, spent the week under canvas. Major Pinwell. G. 5.0., Canterbury, was the. Commanding Officer, with Mnjor E. A. Belcher second in command. The adjutant was Captain A. Critnhiey-Salmonson; assistant adjutant. Captain V. Farthing: musketry instructor. Lieutenant P. P.. Henderson N.Z.S.C.; chaplain. Rev. O. S. BryanBrown: sergeant-major attached for duty, Sergeant-Major W. C. S. Colclough. N.Z.P.S. "Reveille" was at 6.30 a.m., and "Lights out" at 9 p.m.
An excuse was placed before a magistrate in one of the provincial towns recently thiir a young man should be acquitted of the charge of defaulting from drill on the ground that be bad once been struck by n wail from a blank cartridge carelessly fired by a comrade, and that his mother bad been nervous about him going to drill ever r-ince. -You don't expect that it will happen ngninV" asked the niagis.<nte. "Well, it might." replied the lad. ffje magistrate would uot concede that the incident was the fault of the defence authorities, but be dismissed the case. There is something to be said in favour of having one's mother to conduct one by the hand to arid from drill. "Rifleman" was trjiDg to tnink out a feasible scheme recently to Tiroviuo seating accommodation for waiting mothers at the drill hall while their bright boys carried out their drill. The idea was that it would nil the fond parent with pride- if she could only know how well her youog hopeful looked on that common Montiuorcucy boy. I was quite proud of the scheme really, but when I took a member of B Company into my eonadence about it. he pot quite huffy, and said 1 couldn't "pull his bloomin , leg," or words to that effect.
The Auckland Field Artillery Brigade, as a wnclc. goes imo camp at Hautapu on May 1, but arrangements have been made for the A Battery to leave town on April 29 for an extra two days' training. The battery, in common with the other Auckland territorial unit?, was forced to abandon all training during the strike, aud as field artillery work wfch the new 18-pounders is far from easy, the two extra days in camp will certainly he of beueflt to the corps. The battery has licnn recruiting largely during the past fow monthri. particularly amons the drivers, and the officers axe looking forward to the opportunity of giving these men some real training with the teams. 3d the nature of things driving practice rannot well be carried ont at eve.ning drills, and the drivers are namrally dependent to a large exte.nX on daylight, parades and the annual camp. Mew Zealand boys are remarkably quick In picking up a knowledge of this class of work, as is shown by the fact that last year's brigade camp at Morriusville passed off with only one accident, and that a minor one, although for a week the guns were being galloped up hill and down dale over the rolling connu-y near the camp. Xot a single horse was injured in this work. During one of the Southern camps last year a brigade commander trotted his entire brigade in line over a newly-stumped'paddock, of very uneven eurface. and the only accident happened to a gunner, who jot jolted off one of the wagons.
There will be no parades of A Battery on Thursday, April a, and Tuesday, April 11.
