His Honor Mr. Justice Cooper returned to Auckland last evening from Hamilton, where he has been engaged taking the civil sittings. Major General Godley, Officer Commanding the Forces, returned to WeiI Hngton yesterday after having come up 'specially for the ceremony at Orakau. Col. K. Logan, Hon. 'A.D.C. who has been on a' Departmental visit to the Waikato and attended the unveiling of the monument at Orakau yesterday, returned to Auckland last evening. Mr. Harold' Biggs has been appointed secretary of the Christchureh Musical Society. ~" r -■: Mr. W. A. Stout,, who for thirteen years has been connected with the Heathcote School, was entertained by the residents and made. the recipient c*f several presentations, on leaving to take charge of the Cashmere Hills school. Mr. E. H. Hiley, the general manager of the New Zealand Railways, was an international hockey player In the Old Country, and when this was discovered the Wellington Affiociation promptly 'made him a vice-president. Mr. D. D. Macfarlane, of Waiau, eon. of the late Sir John ilaefarlane, died at Christchurch on Tuesday from heart failure. He was closely connected with public affairs in Xorth Canterbury, and contested the Hurunui seat at the last election as a "Keform" candidate. The death has taken place at Waikiwi, Invercargill. of Mr. T. S. ißoyds, aged 70 years, one of the earliest and best known settlers in Southland. He came to the colony in 1857 from the Old Country. After fanning for a while he joined , Mr. T. M. McDonald, solicitor, and subsequently went into business as an estate asent and accountant.
